As a visitor to Melbourne, I’ve watched Melbourne-based artist Deb paint and admired her passion for her work.
Being from Sydney, I’d seen Deb’s work here and there, at places like May’s Lane. And it had never really dawned on me just how much impact Deb’s work had had on the landscape of Melbourne’s laneways and walls.
That was, until I moved to Melbourne.
Living here, not a day goes by when I don’t catch a glimpse of one of Deb’s signature femme fatales staring back at me with it’s big, dreamy eyes.
Deb is everywhere in Burn City.
Today, Deb took a little time out to chew the fat with me.
1. Can you sketch how you feel right now?
2. Where are you (and describe your surrounds)?
Painting in a lane way in Sydney.
3. What’s your favorite thing about where you are?
Getting to be surrounded by fumes… Jokes, being able to paint a large wall.
4. Describe what you do:
Art, paint, draw, eat , drink, sleep and other stuff…
5. What influenced you to do what you do?
Life.
6. Who (dead or alive) would you want to work with and why?
Um… Hajime Sorayama from japan.
He’s no longer alive but unbelievable. He died at about 35 years old and so in the space of about 15 or so years, did the most incredible art work, and more paintings then some artists will do in a long lifetime.
7. What was the last message you sent on your phone?
Ummm can’t remember.
8. What was the last song heard and what does it remind you of?
Bob Dylan’s “Don’t think twice”, and reminds me of being 15 because I listened to Bob Dylan alot when I was 15… for some reason. Still love it.
9. What’s the next big thing?
Travel and lots of it, all over the world hopefully.
10. What’s 2010 about for you?
Love, success and fitness as well as hopefully a little relaxing at some stage.
You can see more of Deb’s work on her website http://deb.net.au/. And if you’re in Sydney next Friday, make sure you get down to May’s Lane to see Deb and Mini Graff take over the walls. Check out http://mays.org.au/ for more info. May’s Lane is launching it’s first ever series of screen-prints by Deb at the event (prints can be purchased via May’s Lane).

Good news, Hajime is alive!! We have an interview with him in the next issue also (not beyond the grave) in his studio, So lament no longer Deb.
That’s awesome!!
