Blog Rewind: Hotel Fox

On 12 May 2008, Hotel FOX made it’s first appearance on my blog, Pretty Ghetto (the old version). Even though I hadn’t been there (yet), Hotel FOX had been on my radar for quite some time and this was the first time I’d written about it. Here’s what I had to say:

I think it’s about time I mention one of my favourite places in the world. Ever.

Hotel FOX
Hotel FOX began in part as Project FOX – a component of the launch campaign for the Volkswagen Fox (a VW “mini-car”). The project gathered together 21 international graphic designers, urban artists and illustrators to transform an otherwise simple hotel in central Copenhagen into the world’s most exciting and creative lifestyle hotel.

I’ve posted 2 of my favourite rooms below – but I highly recommend you check out the Hotel FOX website here for more photos of the other 59 rooms and many more hotel spaces including hallways, bars and communal areas.

Room 214: Two Swans by Friendswithyou

Room 121: Sleep Seasons by Australian design collective Rinzen

It’s hard to believe I said that a place I’d never been to was one of my favourite places ever. I guess it was wishful thinking -  maybe I hoped it’d be one of my favourite places, someday. And sometimes the power of wishful thinking is overwhelming.

18 months later, I found myself in Copenhagen – for the specific purpose of visiting this curious hotel.

And which rooms did I stay in? I stayed in both Room 121 and 214 (and Room 116).

Back in 2008, I hoped I’d make it there someday. But with a giant mortgage and a million other priorities, traveling to Copenhagen to stay at a design hotel just wasn’t that high on the priorities list. And then my world was turned upside down by a pending divorce, which turned out to be the best motivation I could have had in terms of visiting Hotel FOX.
Just goes to show that if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen. Even if you have to get divorced to do it.
Would I recommend going all the way to Copenhagen to visit Hotel FOX? Maybe, if you’re a design fiend like me. But maybe you should check out some of the other cool stuff Copenhagen has to offer. Like the Little Mermaid, Danish meatballs, Princess Mary, platform 4 at Copenhagen Central (great for panel spotting) and Kristiania just to mention a few of the Greatest Danes…
